“A brilliant genre-buster.... Propulsive, can’t-stop-now reading.”   —Stephen King

For more than ten years, a mysterious and violent predator committed fifty sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated ten sadistic murders. Then he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area.

Three decades later, Michelle McNamara, a true crime journalist who created the popular website TrueCrimeDiary.com, was determined to find the violent psychopath she called "the Golden State Killer." Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark—the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death—offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind. It is also a portrait of a woman’s obsession and her unflagging pursuit of the truth. Utterly original and compelling, it has been hailed as a modern true crime classic—one which fulfilled Michelle's dream: helping unmask the Golden State Killer.

I’m an Australian father of two boys who has moved to LA to further my wife’s career . This book quickly got a hold of my fears and anxiety . Reading this at night , with kids in bed and sometimes with wife away on business ,heightened the senses to every sound in the house . The doors were locked and double checked . A great read into the primal fear of any family . Loved it
  • Book Slows In The Middle

Great writer and story. Very matter of fact. The middle just dragged.

A good read, however, extremely hard to follow. The information was there but the book jumped from place to place. Would have helped to have had a map of some sort, if you were not familiar with the areas. Thank God they got the SOB and may he rot in hell for all he’s done. I hope Michelle knows it.
  • Extraordinary story

I read this not long after GSK was arrested. The author was very, very close--uncannily so. She deserves credit for that. The book sags in the middle and I would've liked more psychological detail, more of the profile. I wish she were alive to see him behind bars. I like to believe she's up there smiling, her mission accomplished. RIP, god bless, and well done, Michelle.

I’d give this six stars if I could - I literally couldn’t put it down. I can’t believe this is Michelle’s only book. She writes so beautifully and just wanted more. I so wish this book had been the beginning of her career as a novelist and not the end. Loved it.
